Understanding Cataract Surgery Recovery

Right after surgery, most patients notice watery eyes, a sensation that feels like there is grit in the eye, and sometimes blurry or even double vision. Your eye may appear red or bloodshot because of increased blood flow during the healing process. During these initial 24-48 hours, it is crucial to rest, use your prescribed medicated eye drops, and avoid any activities that may put pressure on the healing eye.

Your eye doctor will supply you with protective gear such as an eye shield or patch to wear—especially while sleeping—to prevent accidental rubbing or pressure on the operated eye. It is equally important to avoid driving since the lingering effects of medication and blurred vision can make driving unsafe. Let your family or a friend help you with transportation and daily tasks while you recover.

The first few days following cataract surgery are all about allowing your eye to adjust and start healing properly. Many patients experience mild discomfort, slight pain, or irritations like a gritty feeling, which are normal side effects of the healing process. During this period, your eye’s sensitivity to light may increase, so wearing sunglasses is highly recommended even indoors if the lighting is bright.

At this stage, here are some key precautions to keep in mind:

• Do not bend over or perform any heavy lifting to avoid placing extra pressure on your eye.
• Steer clear of swimming, hot tubs, or any activities that can expose your healing eye to water or foreign elements.
• Avoid the use of hair products, perfumes, or makeup near the eye area.

These recommendations help to reduce the chances of infection, inflammation, or accidental injury during the most critical healing phase.

As you move into the first week after surgery, the initial discomfort will gradually subside, and your vision may start to improve noticeably, albeit still fluctuating. Even though your eye may be feeling better, your recovery instructions remain essential, and you must continue using the prescribed eye drops. These drops are designed to prevent infection and control inflammation, so be sure to follow the instructions provided by our eye doctors closely.

During the first week, you should also pay special attention to your hygiene. When showering or washing your face, avoid letting soap or water come directly into contact with your eye. Instead, gently clean your face with a soft washcloth, taking care to keep the operated eye closed. If needed, you may even wear specially designed eyeglasses or a protective covering to prevent accidental rubbing or scratching.
